COVID-19 Message from the Grand Master

COVID-19 Update: Message from the Grand Master To All Vasa Members: Many members are asking about Lodge meetings during this Pandemic COVID-19. The Grand Lodge Constitution for Local Lodges states that a minimum of nine (9) regular meetings are to be held during the year. Owing to the number of people suffering the effects of the virus threat as well as directives to distance one self and isolate from others, I am therefore making an Executive Order to suspend the meeting requirement for the remainder of this calendar year. Our members are to stay safe and healthy and as time permits and the Pandemic ceases, we will once again enjoy the Camaraderie of our meetings and events with renewed Enthusiasm. In Generosity, Truth & Unity Art Björkner Grand Master

Swedish King & Queen to visit Delaware in May

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden will celebrate the 375th anniversary of the New Sweden Colony, which ultimately became the city of Wilmington. The visit was officially announced by the Swedish and Finnish embassies in Washington in coordination with the Delaware-based New Sweden Alliance. The King and Queen will be joined by Finland's Speaker of the Parliament Eero Heinäluoma for the visit to Wilmington on Saturday, May 11, 2013. In a statement announcing the visit, Swedish Ambassador to the U.S., Jonas Hafström says, "We will celebrate on May 11 not only the founding of the New Sweden venture in the Delaware Valley 375 years ago, but the continuing relationship between Sweden and the United States." The Kalmar Nyckel landed on the shores of the Christina River in 1638, establishing a settlement made up of Swedish and Finnish colonists. Finland was a part of Sweden at the time. The royal visit is being called the highlight of a year-long celebration throughout the region of the founding of the New Sweden Colony at Fort Christina. Other events include a symposium in Philadelphia hosted by the Swedish and Finnish embassies and attended by the King and Queen of Sweden and the Finnish Parliament Speaker. There will be a wreath laying ceremony at the Finnish Monument in Chester, Pa. In Delaware, public ceremonies will be held at "The Rocks," the original landing site at Fort Christina State Park. The King and Queen will reenact the disembarking from the tall ship Kalmar Nyckel, a replica of the original 1638 ship. Governor Markell will initiate a state-sponsored archaeological dig for the original 1638 Fort Christina. The dignitaries will also visit Old Swedes Church, the first Lutheran Church in the New World. The evening will wrap up with a Jubilee dinner at the Chase Center on the Wilmington Riverfront. You can learn more about the year-long schedule of events to celebrate the anniversary online at 375th.org.

Golf Tournament to Benefit RI Swede

"Sea Corp 12th Annual Charity Golf Invitational"scheduled for Friday June 15, 2012 announces "Liam the Lion Fund" as one of the charities that will benefit from this years event.

"Liam The Lion Olson is a 2 year old boy who was born with a rare genetic disorder. After spending the first 10 months of his life in the hospital he is now home with his Mom and Dad. Liam is dependant on a ventilator and relies on a wheelchair or his parents for all of his mobility. Liam's family is committed to providing all the joy and fun that childhood entails which has proven financially difficult as costly custom equipment is often the only option. The Liam the Lion Fund has been created to help Liam and his family make that possible. The first goal is help with the purchase of a van customized for Liam's needs so that he can travel to appointments and go on family adventures safely and easily." The previous narrative was taken from facebook ~ Liam the Lion Fund. Liam is now three years old and continues to grow. His parents; Eric & Karin, care for their beautiful boy 24/7, and the need for a specialized van has become even more pressing.

Liam is the great-nephew of our District Master, Carol Olson. Carol informs us that it was a Svea Lodge member;Sharon Boisvert, who made the connection with the event possible. Sharon reports that the tournament has a scramble format with several unique rules that encourage Mulligans. This is done because all of the proceeds from these items go directly to the charity. She informs us that those individuals who have attended the event in the past have always had a good time. Please spread the word to any golfers you know who might be interested in this type of an event. They can enjoy a fun day of golf while supporting a wonderful family in need.

The event is scheduled for June 15, 2012 at the Green Valley Country Club. Price is $95 per golfer and reservations are due by June 6, 2012. Contact Jodi Baker for more information at (401)847-2260 x3100 or [email protected]

PDM, PGLD Death Notice

Carl Eric Lundbohm Dec 27, 1921 - January 7, 2012

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of our brother
Carl Eric Lundbohm.

Carl was a Past Grand Lodge Deputy, and Past District Master of District Lodge, Rhode Island No.3, Vasa Order of America. He served as District Master with distinction from April 1989 to April 1991 He was a member of Quahog Lodge #725, and the husband of Sister Dorothy (Ballestraci) Lundbohm. Carl is remembered for his many years of service to the District, and, as a founding member of the Rhode Island PDM Club.

Carl is also remembered for his many years of service at Little Rhody Vasa Park in Foster, RI. He was an inveterate member of the Park Committee, and an active member of the "Thursday Morning Boys". His dedication was instrumental to getting many of the improvement projects completed over the years. Even when he could no longer physically volunteer, his spirit and support continued to influence the other members of our group.

On a personal note,.. Carl was a wonderful mentor to me. He was a forward thinking man who was always prepared. He greeted you with a warm smile, and was never afraid to jump in where needed. He acted as a cheerleader for his native Sweden and advocated for the Vasa Order whenever possible. I feel blessed that I had the privilege to work alongside him on the Park Committee, and he is an inspiration for my service to the Vasa Order.

I offer deepest condolences on behalf of District Lodge Rhode Island No.3, Vasa Order of America. Carl was an exemplary representative of our organization, and he will be sadly missed.

Carol Olson
District Master

Those wishing to honor his memory, can send donations to Little Rhody Vasa Park c/o Linda Johnson 43 Holden Street Warwick, RI 02889
