March Meeting

The March meeting had a St. Patrick's Day Theme with lots of greens and shamrocks adorning the hall. Members enjoyed a lunch from the famous Marie's Pizza, with salad and ice cream sandwiches for dessert.

Delegates to the district convention in May were chosen. John and Louise Nygard will once again represent Kronan.

Program Activity Director Louise Nygard led the group in proposing and choosing the agenda for the rest of 2018 and all of 2019. Once finalized members can expect to see a new program booklet in their mailboxes for future meeting dates and activities for Kronan.

It was good to see Arnie Lidquist in attendance again after having some medical issues. Louise Nygard reported on members Lydia Sanderson and Irma Lech. Both are now home and recovering. We can't wait and hope to see them return to meetings soon.

The day was finished with a few rounds of a fun dice game called Left, Right, Center.

The next meeting for Kronan will be Sunday May 20, 2018 at 1pm. Please note the meeting location has changed and will take place at Ikea Schaumburg. Please contact Louise Nygard to RSVP and for further information.

November Meeting

The November meeting was our Holiday Party. The hall was decorated in reds and greens with plenty of Santas and Jul Boks. Members enjoyed a catered lunch from Olive Garden of spaghetti, meatballs, and salad with tiramisu for dessert.

It was a pleasure to have Margot Ward join us again, but we were missing Lydia Sanderson who is out having surgery again, and Arnie Lidquist who is not feeling well.

Kronan received 2 new applications for membership from Karl Nygard and Angelique Nygard. Their applications were accepted and approved.

Program Activity Director Louise Nygard brought cryptic November/December/Holiday themed word games for members to play.

The day ended with the popular $5 grab bag. Louise Nygard read The Night Before Christmas and every time the word 'The' is said the gift is passed to the left. At the end of the reading members get the gift in front of them. Laughs were had by all.

The next Kronan meeting will be Sunday March 18, 2018 at Svithiod Hall. Please call Louise Nygard if you plan on attending.

September Meeting

The September meeting was a celebration of Kronan's 107th anniversary with a fall harvest theme. Members enjoyed a pizza lunch of sausage, cheese, and supreme pizza.

The charter was draped and a memorial had for the passing of long time members Herman Dahl (8/22/30 - 9/10/17) & Florence Swanson (3/3/17 - 9/3/17). Joan Asplund read the obituaries for each member.

The day ended with members playing the new fun dice game LCR and then Tripoley.

The next meeting of Kronan (and last meeting of the year) will be November 19, 2017 at 1pm at Svithiod Hall. Please bring a $5 wrapped gift to share. If attending please RSVP to Program Activity Director Louise Nygard.

March Meeting

Members met at Omega restaurant for our March meeting. They enjoyed a nice lunch and had a short informational meeting after.

It was good to see Arnie Lidquist recovering well and be able to join us after being out for knee surgery.

Delegates were chosen for the May convention. John and Louise Nygard will be attending to represent Kronan.

The 2017 program was discussed and it was decided to no longer meet each month at Svithiod Hall. Keep your eyes peeled for the 2017 program book to be printed and in the mail shortly with further details on which months we will meet and where. If interested in attending a meeting please contact Program Activity Director/Financial Secretary Louise Nygard.

November Meeting

The November meeting had the hall adorned with reds, greens, and lots of Santa's. Members enjoyed pizza and salad for lunch with plenty of desserts including cake, danish, and Lydia Sanderson's homemade cookies.

Louise Nygard reported on a few members not in attendance. Joan Asplund is enjoying her winter in Florida. Arnie Lidquist is home from rehab and doing well, but continuing to rehab his knee. Marge Johnson is doing well and enjoys reading updates from the lodge in the Valhornet!

The day concluded with a few rounds of Royal Rummy, with winners of each round getting a Christmas gift. Then members had fun posing for pictures with their 'Santa beards' Audrey Fields brought to share.



23-Oct-16
October Meeting

October's meeting had the hall decorated with Pumpkins and plenty of orange for Halloween. Members enjoyed Browns Chicken For lunch, with potatoes, cole slaw and sherbet for dessert.

Cultural Leader Joan Asplund reported on the Swedish Museum and Vasa Park.

A few members not in attendance were reported on. Lydia Sanderson was feeling a bit under the weather and staying with her daughter for a bit. Ethel Johnson took a fall, but is doing okay. Arnie Lidquist had his knee replaced and currently is in rehab, but heading home soon.

Nominations for officers for 2017 were taken and all current positions will be kept for another year.

The day concluded with some of those in attendance dressing up and showing off their Halloween costumes. Audrey Fields came as a ladybug, Kim Bojarski came as 'Soft Kitty', Dan Szymanski came as a baseball player, John Nygard came as a zombie biker, and Louise Nygard came as his sexy biker wife. Then everyone played a fun game created by our own Louise Nygard, where everyone had to guess what was in each bag just by feeling it.



28-Aug-16
August Meeting

Members enjoyed a picnic lunch of hot dogs, brats, and sauerkraut with cole slaw. Ice cream cup sundaes were enjoyed for dessert.

Louise Nygard reported on a few members not able to attend the meetings. Tom Smith is still recovering and walking on crutches. Helen Strandberg is 102! She now resides at Norwood Crossing. Ethel Johnson is doing great at 100!

Secretary Audrey Fields told everyone in attendance about her recent trip to Sweden over the summer.

The September meeting is canceled, but please join us for our next scheduled meeting on October 23, 2016 celebrating Halloween - don't forget your costume!

April Meeting

Members enjoyed a Spring inspired meeting. Lunch included Italian Beef with all the fixings, Italian sausage, chips, pickles, and salad. Dessert was dixie ice cream cups and chocolate chip cookies.

We were pleased to have member Tom Smith stop by for a quick hello with his daughter. He is still recovering from his broken leg, but it was good to see him getting out again.

Louise and John Nygard, along with Joan Asplund will be attending the VASA convention next month and will bring back a report about the on-goings of it at a future meeting.

The day concluded with a few rounds of Bunco with prizes for all.

March Meeting

Due to the Easter holiday, March's regular meeting was moved one day earlier to Saturday and held at the Olive Garden.

Part of the change was also to celebrate long time member Ethel Johnson's birthday. She turns 100 on Easter Sunday!

Members all enjoyed each others company and a great lunch. Dessert was brought by Audrey Fields, a Happy 100th cake from her local bakery. Happy Birthday was sung to Ethel as well as Ja Må Du Leva (with a slight change to the wording to wish her 200 years!).

Ethel was presented with Happy Birthday and Happy Easter balloons, a blue and yellow corsage, and of course presents.

The day concluded with goodie bags given to all in attendance, brought by Joan Asplund of some Wasa hardtack in cute reusable containers.



28-Feb-16
February Meeting

February's meeting was St. Patrick's Day Themed, with the hall adorned with lots of greens and shamrocks. Members enjoyed a lunch of corned beef with ham, cheese, cole slaw, and potato salad. Lydia Sanderson didn't disappoint with her homemade dessert of lemon bars and chocolate brownies.

The Auditors had their annual audit in January and reported that the books were kept in excellent order by treasurer Linda Bojarski.

Delegates for the VASA convention in May were selected. Representing Kronan will be John and Louise Nygard and Joan Asplund.

Louise Nygard reported on Tom Smith. He's doing well but still working on his injured leg and is still not up to making it out to meetings. Lydia Sanderson reported on member Florence Swanson who is about to celebrate her 101st birthday! We were pleased to see Treasurer Linda Bojarski getting around well and in attendance after having a hip replacement last month.

A reminder that the next meeting will be held on Saturday March 26th at the Olive Garden in Arlington Heights. The meeting was moved due to our regular meeting falling on Easter Sunday.

The day concluded with many fun games of Bingo with prizes to all the winners. Thanks to Lydia Sanderson, Audrey Fields, and Arnie Lidquist for supplying the prizes.

December Meeting

December's meeting was a Holiday Party! The hall was decorated with Christmas decor, while the holiday radio played Christmas tunes all afternoon long.

Members enjoyed a lunch of Brown's Chicken, with mashed potatoes and cole slaw, complete with a 'Merry Christmas' cake and assorted chocolates for dessert.

Louise reported that member Tom Smith fell and broke his leg. He's doing good and recovering at home. Also Lydia Sanderson is having surgery today. Audrey Fields spoke with Betty Wahl and she is still doing alright and hanging in there. We wish them all well.

The day concluded with our $5 grab bag. Louise Nygard gave everyone a playing card, as your card was called you got to go choose a gift! After all had a gift, it was time to open them!

A remember was given that the next scheduled meeting for the lodge will be Sunday February 28, 2016 at Svithiod Hall.

October Meeting

Octobers meeting was Halloween themed, with the hall adorned in a lot of orange and lit up pumpkins. Members enjoyed a lunch of Brown's Chicken, cole slaw, mashed potatoes, and rolls, with cherry coffee cake and brownies home made by Lydia Sanderson, and Carrot Cake brought by Audrey Fields for dessert.

Co-Program Activity director Louise Nygard presented members with an outline for 2016's meetings and activities. Members brainstormed and helped put together next years program. Look for the 2016 program in the mail by the beginning of the year!

Cultural Leader Joan Asplund gave members a report on Vasa Park and the year they had, and what's in store for 2016.

The day concluded with members putting on their best Halloween costumes. John Nygard came as a zombie biker dude, Louise Nygard came as a sexy biker chick, Audrey Fields came as a ladybug, and Joan Asplund came as a spider lady.

Due to scheduling conflicts Kronan's holiday meeting will be moved to Saturday December 6, 2015 at Svithiod Hall beginning at 1pm. Please bring a $5 grab bag.

September Meeting

September's meeting celebrated the lodges 105th anniversary with an indoor picnic! Members enjoyed hot dogs with all the fixings, chips, and Lydia Sanderson's homegrown tomatoes. For dessert members enjoyed Florentine cookies and cake.

An application for membership was accepted and approved for Irma Lech. She was gladly welcomed by all members in attendance.

The day concluded with many rounds of Bunco, complete with prizes for those top winners.

May Meeting

May's meeting was a small get together, but a fun one none the less. Members enjoyed pizza for lunch with Lydia Sanderson's Rhubarb Yummy Cake for dessert.

A motion was made and seconded to take out an ad for the lodge in the VASA Park Scandinavian Day program book in September.

A reminder was made that Kronan will be on Summer Break for June and July, with the next scheduled meeting being August 16, 2015.

Members spent the remainder of the meeting discussing their roots, travels, and memories.

April Meeting

During April's meeting members enjoyed an Italian Beef lunch with cole slaw and potato salad. A cake was presented for Joan Asplund's birthday and all members sang Happy Birthday before enjoying the cake with her.

Cultural leader Joan Asplund reported on the new Viking Ship display at the Swedish American Museum and encouraged members to go see it.

The day concluded with many fun rounds of Bunco with prizes for all who played.

March Meeting

St. Patrick's Day was the theme for this months meeting. The hall was decorated in greens and Shamrocks to coincide. Members enjoyed a corned beef lunch with cole slaw, potato salad, and pickles, with a delicious strawberry-filled white cake for dessert.

Ethel Johnson was in attendance to enjoy the cake as members celebrated her 99th birthday by singing Happy Birthday and Ja Må Du Leva as she blew out the candles.

The charter was draped once again to honor member Hank Sanderson (d. 1/11/15), as well as members whom recently passed Ken Olson (d. 1/10/15), Bernice Baake (d. 12/11/14), and Madeline Olson (d. 11/27/14). A motion was made a seconded to purchase a brick in Hank's name at Vasa Park. Chairman John Nygard then read a poem in dedication to the recently passed members.

A motion was made and seconded to renew the lodges membership with Vasa Park for 2015.

The day ended with many fun rounds of the game Penny Anti.



22-Feb-15
February Meeting

Valentine's Day and Mardi Gras were the themes for this months meeting. The hall was nicely decorated in red with hearts as well as greens, purples, and golds. Members enjoyed Brown's Chicken with mashed potatoes, cole slaw, and broccoli with cake for dessert.

The charter was draped and a moment of silence held for the passing of Hank Sanderson (d. 1/11/15), Ken Olson (d. 1/10/15), Bernice Baake (d. 12/11/14), and Madeline Olson (d. 11/27/14).

Delegates were nominated and voted on for the 2015 Convention in May. Representing Kronan are John and Louise Nygard and Joan Asplund.

The day concluded with a few rounds of Valentine's bingo with pizes for all playing.



23-Nov-14
November Meeting

The November meeting was a Holiday celebration. The hall was decorated with reds, greens, along with many Santa's and snowmen. Members were served a luncheon of Swedish meatballs, mashed potatoes, salad, and Limpa bread. Dessert was a delicious home-made rice pudding from Margot Ward. Margot explained how two cups of pudding contained an almond, and the ones who had the almond traditionally must perform something for the group. Margot and Tom Smith ended up entertaining everyone as they enjoyed their pudding.

A beautiful Lucia program was presented to members. Kim Bojarski served as Lucia while Joan Asplund and Audrey Fields served as her court. Lucia and her court were helped out vocally by the choir of Louise Nygard and Margot Ward, along with the rest of the members in attendance. The ladies processed in singing Sankta Lucia. Kim read the Lucia Poem, followed by everyone singing Nu Tändas Tusen Juleljus and Stilla Natt/Silent Night half in Swedish half in English. The program concluded with the members being served Lucia Buns and coffee.

Members then all sat around the tables with their grab bag presents and Louise Nygard read 'The Night Before Christmas.' Each time 'THE' was read members were to pass the gift to the left. When the story ended whichever present was in front of them was their grab bag gift to take home.



26-Oct-14
October Meeting

October's meeting was a Halloween theme with the hall decorated in lots of orange and pumpkins. Members enjoyed finger sandwiches, hardtack, limpa, liver sausage, cole slaw, potato salad, pickles with home made pumpkin spice for dessert.

The charter was draped and a moment of silence had for the passing of long time and extremely active member Esther Shag, as well as Frank Bojarski whom is husband and father of members Linda and Kim Bojarski. Both their obituaries were read. A memorial brick at VASA park will be taken out in Esther's name.

Cultural Leader Joan Asplund gave a report on the VASA Park meeting she attended.

Program & Activity Director Louise Nygard lead everyone in attendance in choosing the program for next year. Dates, meals and activities were planned. Members can look for their copy of the 2015 program in the new year.

The day concluded with a Costume Contest. Kim Bojarski came as a baseball player, Louise Nygard dressed as a downhill skiier, John Nygard came as a sea captain, and Audrey Fields dressed as a panda.

September Meeting

September's Meeting celebrated the lodges 104th anniversary. Members enjoyed Brown's Chicken, with potatoes, cole slaw, homemade pickles, with pound cake and strawberries and whipped cream for dessert.

The sick committee reported that Marcella Carlson fell and broke her shoulder.

The charter was draped and a moment of silence held for the passing of long time and active member Judy Stuyvesant whom passed on September 12, 2014. A donation to the Swedish American Museum was made in her honor.

The day concluded with a few fun rounds of Bunco with prizes for the winners.



23-Aug-14
August Meeting

August's meeting was an indoor picnic. Members enjoyed hotdogs with all the fixings, home grown tomatoes, cole sale, Lydia Sanderson's homemade 3 bean salad, chips, with ice cream sundae cups for dessert.

An update was given on those members not in attendance. Judy Stuyvesant is very sick and not doing well. Bob Anderson is at Church Creek home and is currently 99 years old! Harmony Anderson has cancer of the mouth. Christa Holman goes to Florida for the winter time. Helen Stromberg is now 100 years old! Doris Sutor was in a bad car accident and now living with her children. Betty Wahl is home and doing well. Margot Ward is in New York. Esther Shag who is 97 now is in skilled care. Gertie Strand just celebrated her 92nd birthday. Bernice Baake moved to a home out in Crystal Lake.

A reminder was given that Scandinavian Days at VASA Park will take place on Sunday September 7th.

May Meeting

May's meeting was a 90th birthday party for member Tom Smith. Tom graciously provided a Swedish meatball lunch for all in attendance. Lunch was followed by a birthday cake for dessert complete with a round of Happy Birthday for Tom.

Co-Cultural Leader Joan Asplund continued her Swedish lessons with the group, providing more handouts for members to follow along with and take home.

The meeting concluded with members enjoying each others company while chatting about all kinds of things.



27-Apr-14
April Meeting

April's meeting was catered by Jay's Beef, provided by Arnie Lidquist. Members enjoyed Italian Beef sandwiches, with sausage, cole slaw, and chips. Audrey Fields made a delicious shrimp spread and Doris Sutor brought bagel chips for members to munch on as appetizers. Dessert was a huge chocolate sheet cake along with cinnamon raisin cake.

We had the pleasure of having two guests present for April's, meeting, Financial Secretary Louis Nygard's sister Linda and her husband Paul.

It was reported that Past Chairman and active member in Vasa for many years Virginia Lindroos passed away the day before our meeting. The charter was draped and moment of silence was had for her.

The sick committee reported that Judy Stuyvesant is still not feeling 100%, but still in good spirits. Ken and Madeline Olsen say hi, but Ken's leg is still not doing well.

Co-Cultural Leader Joan Asplund presented members the first of many Swedish lessons to be done at each meeting to help those whom may not speak, or may need a refresher on how to speak the language. She provided handouts for all and went over how to pronounce the language as well as a few basic words and phrases.

The day concluded with a few rounds of Bingo, with prizes for all who played.

March Meeting

March's meeting was a St. Patrick's Day theme. The hall was adorned with lots of corresponding decor including lots of green. Members enjoyed a 'traditional' St. Patrick's Day lunch of corned beef sandwiches with cole slaw, potato salad, tomatos, pickles, and had to keep it a bit Swedish with some herring. Dessert was a lemon cake.

The charter was draped for the passing of member Mary Ann Swanson, who passed away on March 11, 2014. Her obituary was read and a moment of silence was had.

Hank and Lydia visited a few home-bound members since the last meeting. They reported that they attended Florence Swanson's 99th birthday party. They also visited Gertie Strand, whose health, they reported, unfortunately is deteriorating.

Louise Nygard spoke with a few members not in attendance and says Harmony Anderson, Herman Dahl and Betty Wahl all are doing okay and say hello. Margot Ward is in NY for an extended trip with her daughter and also says hello. Ken and Madeline say hello, but are not in attendance due to trouble with Ken's leg.

Audrey Fields gave an update on her mom, Judy Stuyvesant, and said she is feeling better, but still has additional testing to do in coming weeks.

Four delegates were chosen to represent Kronan at the next convention in May out in Burr Ridge, IL (May 30-June1). This years delegates are Joan Asplund, Hank Sanderson, John Nygard, and Louise Nygard.

To correspond with the St. Patrick's Day theme of the meeting, co-Cultural Leader Joan Asplund spoke about St. Urho. A Finish saint that chased the grasshoppers out of Finland. It is celebrated on March 16th, the day before St. Patrick's Day. She concluded by reading a funny poem about him/his legend.

The day ended with a few rounds of Bunco. Lots of prizes were donated by members, so everyone who played left with a prize!



23-Feb-14
February Meeting

February's meeting was a combination Valentine's Day and Mardi Gras theme. The hall was decorated nicely for both. Members enjoyed a lunch from Brown's Chicken that included chicken, potatoes, cole slaw, with Lydia Sanderson's delicious homemade cake, and Doris Sutor's chocolate brittle for dessert.

The sick committee reported that Judy Stuyvesant has been battling some health issues, spending some time in the hospital, but is now happy to be home. She still has more tests to be run and will be seeing more doctors in the following weeks. Bernice Baake is feeling good, but trying some new medication and will join us again once she has acclimated to it. Esther Shag has recovered from a fall, and is doing fairly well now. Betty Wahl is now out of hospice and currently at home. Ethel Johnson is doing well as she comes close to her 98th birthday! Gertie Strand is now in a nursing home as her health is beginning to decline. Florence Swanson is approaching her 99th birthday, but her mind is sharp as a tack despite her vision, hearing, and walking diminishing.

A motion was made and seconded to once again take out a membership in the lodges name with Vasa Park for the 2014 year.

The day concluded with a few rounds of the game Penny Anti. Prizes were awarded to all who played.

November Meeting

The November meeting was a holiday theme. Christmas decorations adorned the hall including many Santas and Snowmen. Members were treated to a catered holiday dinner of baked ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, vegetables, rolls, and salad. Dessert included a fruit cake and a delicious home-made rice pudding from Margot Ward.

A beautiful Lucia program was presented to members. Kim Bojarski served as Lucia while Joan Asplund and Audrey Fields served as her court. Lucia and her court were helped out vocally by the choir of Louise Nygard, Betty Ferina, and Margot Ward. Judy Stuyvesant read the legend of St. Lucia, then the ladies entered singing Sankta Lucia. Kim read the Lucia Poem, followed by Lucia, her court, and the choir singing Nu Tändas Tusen Juleljus, and Stilla Natt/Silent Night half in Swedish half in English. The program concluded with the members being served Lucia Buns and coffee.

Members then all took a circle with their grab bag presents and Louise Nygard read 'The Night Before Christmas.' Each time 'THE' was read members were to pass the gift to the left. When the story ended whichever present was in members lap was their grab bag gift to take home.

The day concluded with Chuck Steneck playing a few songs on the accordion.



27-Oct-13
October Meeting

October found the hall festively decorated with Halloween decor. Many lit up pumpkins and plenty of orange colors. Members were treated to a hotdog lunch with chips, cole slaw, and potato salad with pumpkin pie and Halloween candy for dessert.

A new member application was received from Margot Ward. Her application was gladly accepted.

The sick committee reported that Betty Wahl is doing fine. She is at home with hospice care and says hello to all in attendance. Bob Anderson fell and hurt his wrist but is doing better now.

A motion was made a seconded to take out two Holiday Ornament donations to benefit the Bishop Hill archives in memory of long term Kronan members Ruth Helgeson and Dorothy Chapman.

The election of officers for the 2014 year was held. All officers are gladly keeping their positions with the addition of Joan Asplund joining Judy Styvesant as co-Cultural Leader, Lydia Sanderson joining Louis Nygard as co-Program Activity Director, and Tom taking over as Inner Guard.

Louis Nygard shared the proposed 2014 calendar for Kronan. She has many great activities and meals planned for next year. Members will be receiving a copy of their program in the mail by the end of the year.

The day concluded with a costume contest. Arnie Lidquist came as a scary Minnesota Viking, Kim Bojarski came as a cat, Joan Asplund came as a cowgirl, Louise Nygard came as a tourist, John Nygard came as a scary cowboy, Audrey Fields came as a panda, Dan Szymanski came as The Joker, and Bernice Baake came in her shower cap.

September Meeting

September celebrated Kronan's 103rd anniversary. Members were treated to a catered lunch from Brown's Chicken, consisting of chicken, mashed potatos, cole slaw, and salad with coffee cakes and fudge for dessert.

The charted was draped for the passing of member Roy Westergren who passed away in June. Secretary Audrey Fields read his obituary and a moment of silence was held.

In honor of Kronan's 103rd anniversary long-time member Joan Asplund gave a brief history of where the lodge had met in the past (Verdandi Hall then Haglund Hall, to present day Svithiod Hall).

A thank you card was received from the Hultgrens thanking the lodge for it's hospitality at the August meeting.

A letter was received from the District Cultural Leader letting us know that the District now owns 2 lectures of the Viking Lecture Series for all lodges to utilize. A motion was made and seconded to put Kronan's name on the waiting list to receive it and to inquire further about it.

The day ended with a few rounds of Bunco. Prizes were given to all those who played.

August Meeting

August's meeting was a picnic lunch. Members enjoyed hot dogs (with trimmings), chips, cucumber salad homemade by Louise Nygard, with watermelon and homemade hamburger cookies by Lydia Sanderson.

We were honored to have in attendance District Master Ed Hultgren and his wife Assistant District Secretary and Valhornet editor Joella Hultgren. Ed talked about his travels to the other lodges in the district. He also presented Kronan with a Viking game called Kubb. Joella thanked Kim Bojarski for her imput and work towards the Valhornet.

The sick committee reported that Betty Wahl is in hospice with troubled breathing. Harmony Anderson was diagnosed with cancer in the mouth. Marcella Carlson had her knee operated on and is still in pain from that. Esther Shag was moved to the Life Center at Resurrection. Wally Smith has been in and out of the hospital.

May Meeting

Members were treated to a lunch of sandwiches (cheese, meats, liver sausage, herring) with cole slaw, potato salad, and chips. Everyone enjoyed and got a kick out of the dessert of Klondike ice cream bars.

Vasa sent each lodge stickers to help celebrate Nordic Heritage. Each member in attendance received one. Please see Secretary Audrey Fields if you would like one or more.

A reminder was given that Scandinavian Days at Vasa Park is Sunday September 8th this year.

Louise Nygard brought in Scandinavian cookbooks she purchased at the last convention. If you are interested in purchasing one please see Louise.

The day concluded with members sharing their Scandinavian Heritage items they brought in. Joan Asplund wore her authentic Swedish costume that she had handmade in Sweden and briefly spoke about how the costumes are made and how each city/area has their own unique costumes. She also brought in a few figures and glassware that were from Sweden. Christina Kenron brought in an 1884 Swedish Almanac that was circulated in the US and published by the American Emigrant Company. Linda Bojarski brought in old postcards dated from the turn of the century from her grandmother. This was the main form of communication between relatives in the US and to/from Sweden at the time. Louise Nygard shared some info about her genealogy within her family. In researching she obtained a painting of the family farm in Röstånga, Sweden, and also received a book from extended family still living in Sweden about the city the family was from. John Nygard brought in an extensive framed family tree of his family dating back to 1573 in Sweden.

A reminder was given that there will be no meetings in June or July. The next meeting will be August 25, 2013.

April Meeting

Members enjoyed a lunch of Italian Beef sandwiches with cole slaw and chips. Sherbert ice cream and cookies were for dessert.

The lodge received raffle tickets for the district convention. A motion was made and seconded to purchase all the tickets received in the name of the lodge.

The day concluded with a few games of Bingo with prizes given to the winners.

March Meeting

The March meeting had a St. Patrick's Day theme. The hall was nicely decorated with lots of greens and shamrocks. Members enjoyed a lunch of corned beef sandwiches with cole slaw and potato salad, with delicious lemon cake and strawberries for dessert.

Louise Nygard gave a report on members she had spoken with that were not in attendance. Ken Olsen is still having trouble with his legs and back. Betty Wahl had another heart attack and was found to have cancer, she is currently in hospice.

Ethel Stradberg was in attendance and celebrating her 97th birthday this month. Happy Birthday was sung to her in Swedish and English.

The day concluded with a few rounds of Bunco, prizes being given to the top winners.

February Meeting

February's meeting had a Mardis Gras theme. Members enjoyed a lunch of chicken, mashed potatoes, and cole slaw (catered from Brown's Chicken), with ice cream and Oreos for dessert.

A new membership application was accepted from MaryJane Guth. She was gladly accepted and initiated in.

The sick committee reported that Judy Stuyvesant has a pinched nerve in her back while her daughter and Secretary Audrey Fields was out sick. Ken Olson has a pain in his leg and is currently unable to drive.

John and Louise Nygard and Joan Asplund were elected to be this years delegates to the upcoming VASA convention in Rockford in May. Currently one more spot is available for anyone interested. Please contact chairman John Nygard if interested.

The day concluded with a fun round of Penny Anti, with prizes for the winners.

January Meeting

Valentine's Day was the theme of January's meeting. The hall was adorned with lots of hearts and plenty of candy treats. Lunch of sandwiches, potato salad, cole slaw, pickles, and olives was enjoyed by members. Lunch was completed with a dessert of brownies and cookies.

Inclement weather made for a bad turn out to this months meeting. However business was taken care of and a good time had by all.

All officers for the 2013 year were installed.

The auditors were pleased to report an audit of the books was done the week prior and everything balanced.

Louise Nygard reported that in collecting dues and planning for each month's meetings she is able to be in contact with most members of the lodge. She gave a brief report about those members not in attendance to the January meeting, based on her calls to them.

The day concluded with a few rounds of Valentine's Bingo. Prizes were awarded to all those that won.

November Meeting

November's theme was to celebrate the Holidays. The hall was decorated in both Thanksgiving and Christmas decor. Members enjoyed a catered lunch of ham, sweet potatoes, veggies, salad, and rolls with pumpkin pie for dessert.

The sick committee reported that Millie Ring passed away. A motion was made a seconded to send a memorial in her name to Bethany Home.

Louise Nygard reminded members that the 2013 programs with be showing up in the mail shortly.

A beautiful Lucia program was presented to members. Kim Bojarski served as Lucia while Joan Asplund and Linda Bojarski served as her court. John Nygard read the legend of St. Lucia, then the ladies entered singing Sankta Lucia. Kim read the Lucia Poem, followed by Lucia and her court (with Louise Nygard helping out vocally) singing Nu Tändas Tusen Juleljus, and Silent Night half in Swedish half in English. All songs were accompanied by Marcela Carlson on the piano. The program concluded with the members being served Lucia Buns and coffee.

The day concluded with a $5 grab bag. Everyone who brought a grab bag was given a ticket, as their number was drawn they got to choose a gift.

A reminder was given that there is no December meeting, the next scheduled meeting will be January 27th at 1pm.

October Meeting

October's meeting had the hall beautifully decorated for Halloween complete with lighted pumpkins and hanging decorations. Members enjoyed a lunch of sandwiches from Dominick's with cole slaw and potato salad. Dessert included pumpkin ice cream and homemade hamburger cookies by Lydia Sanderson.

A motion was made for someone to send out get well/thinking of you cards on behalf of Kronan to those sick members or those whom can not get out to attend meetings. Judy Stuyvesant gladly accepted this task.

The sick committee reported that Arnie Lidquist was in attendance to this month's meeting after being out most of the year. He is doing much better.

Program Director Louise Nygard presented the 2013 program. Each month's themes were discussed and decided on by the members. Please see the Calendar to the right for the 2013 program/meeting schedule.

The election of officers was held. All current officers volunteered to stay on for another year and a motion was made and voted on to keep the same officers for 2013.

A special thank you was given to those who help out in the kitchen each month.

The day concluded with a costume contest. John Nygard dressed in a scary mask and witches hat, Kim Bojarski and Dan Szymanski came as Thing 1 and Thing 2, and Audrey Fields and Judy Stuyvesant came as Bacon and Eggs. Prizes were awarded to all those participating.

September Meeting

Kronan celebrated their 102nd anniversary with a lovely dinner catered from Brown's Chicken including chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, and rolls with cheesecake for dessert.

Three duel memberships were received and accepted from Tom Smith and Ken and Madeline Olson.

Chairman John Nygard reported on Vasa Park's Scandinavian Day, noting the excellent food and entertainment.

The charted was draped for the passing of member Charles Stenic. The sick committee reported that Marge Johnson has a broken hip from her fall at the last meeting, but is now up and walking.

The day concluded with a few fun rounds of Bingo and prizes for all who played.



26-Aug-12
August Meeting

The August meeting was an indoor picnic. Members enjoyed hot dogs, potato salad, and cole slaw with root beer floats, ice cream, and homemade cardamon cake (made by Lydia Sanderson) for dessert.

The sick committee reported that Marge Johnson fell and broke her hip earlier in the day on the way to the meeting. Al Meid passed away since the last meeting. A motion was made and seconded to make a donation in Al's name to Vasa Park.

Helen Strandberg turned 98 this month and everyone in attendance sang her Happy Birthday.

Tom Smith and Ken and Madeline Olson were in attendance visiting from Austin Lodge #466.

The day concluded with Louise Nygard leading the members in a trivia game.



20-May-12
May Meeting

Scandinavian Heritage was the theme of the meeting. Members enjoyed a lunch from Browns Chicken complete with chicken, mashed potatoes, cole slaw, mushrooms, with ice cream sundaes for dessert.

The sick committee reported that Gertie Strand is doing well and in attendance to the meeting. Arnie Lidquist is doing better as well.

Joan Asplund was not in attendance because she was representing Kronan at the annual VASA convention. Report to follow next meeting.

The day concluded with everyone's discussions on their Scandinavian backgrounds, including travels, and family.



22-Apr-12
April Meeting

A birthday theme adorned the hall complete with birthday hats and horns for all. Members enjoyed a lunch of deli sandwiches, potato salad, and cole slaw with ice cream dixie cups and Lydia Sandersons homemade coffee cake for dessert.

The lodge welcomed guests from Austin Lodge, Madeline and Ken Olson, and Tom Smith.

The sick committee reported that Bernice Baake had a mild heart attack and is in the hospital. Gertie Strand is now home from her arm injury. Al Meid is at home recovering from a hospital stay due to a swollen leg and a fall. Arnie Lidquist is doing much better as he is up and walking and getting out now. Mary Ann Swanson is now in a nursing home. Louise Nygard was in attendance and doing better from her hospital stay due to nerve issues.

The day concluded with a few rounds of Bunco. Prizes were awarded to the winners.



26-Feb-12
February Meeting

A Mardi Gras theme adorned the hall complete with beads and crowns for all to wear. Members enjoyed a lunch from Brown's Chicken that included chicken, corn, potatoes, cole slaw, and rolls with red velvet and carrot cake for dessert.

Louise Nygard reminded everyone that the 2012 program is out and should have arrived and/or will be arriving in the mail to all members.

The charter was draped for member Irma Kaev whom passed away in December of 2011. Secretary Audrey Fields read her obituary and a moment of silence was had in her honor.

The sick committee reported that Virginia Lindroos had a stroke but is doing well and recovering. Arnie Lidquist is doing well and his legs are improving. He is now getting around with a walker and cane. Gertie Strand is doing better with her arm and currently is in rehab, but going home soon. Hertha Falt had a two strokes and is currently in hospice.

All officers for 2012 were installed.

Chairman John Nygard brought up the raffle tickets for the 2012 VASA dance party that the lodge had received. A motion was made and seconded to take the tickets in Kronan Lodge's name.

The day concluded with a fun game of Penny Anti. Prizes were awarded to the winners.



22-Jan-12
January Meeting

A Valentine's theme adorned the hall, complete with hearts and plenty of themed candy. A luncheon of ham, cheese, and liver sausage sandwiches with potato salad, coleslaw and pickles finishing with a cake for dessert was enjoyed by all.

Due to the in-climate weather preceding the meeting, not many were in attendance.

The charter was draped for the passing of member Irma Kaev. A motion was made and seconded to make a donation in Irma's name to the Diabetes Association. Three members were dropped from the lodge due to non payment of dues.

Program activity director Louise Nygard went over and presented the program for 2012. The projected program can be found to the right under calendar. Please note a change from previous years is the decision to hold a meeting again in August.

The sick committee reported that Arnie Lidquist is doing better and now using a walker to get around. Virginia Lindroos was reported having a stroke, but doing well. She is currently at Harmony Health Center. Gertie Strand fell on her bad arm and is getting therapy in rehab now.

A reminder was made for next meeting to please bring 50 pennies to play the ever so fun Penny Anti game.

The day concluded with a few rounds of Valentine's Bingo complete with prizes for the winners.

November Meeting

The hall was decorated in a Christmas theme for the Holiday party which included many Scandinavian decorations including julboks, candles, ornaments, and trees. A delicious meal of Swedish meatballs, mashed potatoes, string bean casserole, and limpa bread was enjoyed by all.

The charter was draped for the passing of past secretary and past assistant secretary Dorothy Chapman. A motion was made and seconded to donate the two Christmas bulb's received from the National Archives in Dorothy's name as well as Ruth Helgeson's name.

The sick committee reported Arnie Lindquist is not doing well as he is having nerve and muscle problems, which are preventing him from walking well. Betty Wahl had surgery on her face, but says she is doing well. John and Louise Nygard visited Nils Hedeen and reported he is now confined to getting around in a scooter chair.

Louise Nygard reminded everyone it's that time of year and to please pay their dues if they haven't already.

A beautiful Lucia program followed for the members. Kim Bojarski served as Lucia, while Jamie Stone, Joan Asplund, and Audrey Fields served as her court. Virginia Lindroos read the legend of St. Lucia, then the girls processed in singing Sankta Lucia, followed by White Christmas in Swedish and English, and Silent Night in Swedish and English. Jamie Stone sang a gorgeous solo of Nu Tändas Tusen Juleljus. All songs were accompanied by Marcela Carlson on the piano. Kim Bojarski passed out Lucia buns to the members while they sang along to traditional Christmas carols led by Virginia Lindroos.

Everyone was asked to bring a $5.00 grab bag, and those who did received a raffle ticket. By raffle, when their ticket was called, members were then able to go pick a present off the table.

'Santa' (Louise and John Nygard) concluded teh day by handeding out a nice gift of a reusable shopping bag to everyone in attendance.

A reminder was made that there was a will be no meeting in December due to it falling on Christmas. The next meeting will be on January 22, 2012.



23-Oct-11
October Meeting

A Halloween theme adorned the hall, which was decorated with many pumpkins, candy and skeletons! A lunch was enjoyed of sandwich trays and salads, ending with a dessert of Swedish flop and pumpkin tarts.

The sick committee reported that Al Meid had fallen in his home and was taken to the hospital where he received a pacemaker. He is now home and doing well.

A thank you card from the Bojarski family on behalf of Ruth Helgeson was read. All were thanked for the donation to Mayfair Luthern Church in Ruth's name, the many members that attended the funeral services, and John Nygard's kind words he spoke of Ruth.

Louise Nygard presented the program for 2012. Everything was accepted and those dates and activities can be found to the right under calendar.

Election of officers took place. All positions stayed the same with the exception of the following:
Chaplain: Judith Stuyvesant
Vice Master Of Ceremonies: Dan Szymanski
Currently the positions of Assistant Secretary and Cultural Leader are vacant. If you'd like to take one of these positions please contact Louise Nygard.

The next meeting will be Sunday November 20, 2011. This will be the Holiday Party. Please bring a $5 grab bag prize. Note your name and if it's for a male, female, or unisex on the gift.

The day concluded with a costume contest. 6 members dressed up: Kim Bojarski came as a cat (complete with ears and a tail), Bob Anderson had a scary skull mask and witches hat, John Nygard put on a scary troll mask with a witches hat, Marcela Carlson came in a witches mask, Dan Szymanski came as a skeleton, and Audry Fields put on a spider web cape. All that participated won a prize.

Louise Nygard finished the day with a short game of 'finish the sentence.' She read a sentence that contained a quote, song, tv commercial, or slogan, and members had to finish the missing part of her sentence. Fun was had by all.



25-Sep-11
September Meeting

Kronan's 101st Anniversary was celebrated. Members enjoyed a lunch from Brown's Chicken, including chicken, mashed potatos, and cole slaw with ice cream for dessert.

The charter was draped for the passing of two members. Long time Kronan treasurer, Ruth Helgeson and Sheri Peterson. Chairman John Nygard read a memorial he had written and read at Ruth's funeral. A motion was made and seconded to send a memorial in Ruth's name to Mayfair Lutheran Church. A motion was also made a seconded to purchase a brick at Vasa Park in memorial of Sheri and her husband Wayne (who passed on earlier this year).

John Nygard reported on how Scandinavian Days went at Vasa park at the beginning of the month. He reminded everyone that there will be a fish boil at Vasa Park on October 15th.

The day concluded with a few fun round of bingo. Everyone won a prize.

The October meeting will be a Halloween theme. Come dressed up in your craziest Halloween costume! Election of 2012 officers and planning for 2012 will take place.



22-May-11
May Meeting

A Scandinavian theme had the hall nicely decorated with Swedish items/knick knacks. A luncheon of Swedish Meatballs, potato salad, lingon, and rolls with strawberry cheesecake for dessert was enjoyed by all.

Louise and John Nygard and Joan Asplund attended the District Convention. John reported that it was a good meeting and they enjoyed themselves. Joan will report further at the next meeting.

Louise informed everyone that the Aged and Needy fund was now good for a $3000 lifetime benefit and to see her for the forms if interested.

A reminder was made that the June meeting was canceled. The next meeting will be Sunday September 26, 2011 celebrating the 101st anniversary of Kronan. Please bring a prize or two for bingo.

The day concluded with a Scandinavian show and tell. John Nygard brought an old copper coffeepot for a wood stove from Sweden. Betty Wahl brought a statue from Denmark. Arnie Lidquist brought in a picture book of the King & Queen of Sweden's visit to the US in 1988. Louise Nygard brought her mother's Swedish runner, which was made in Sweden for her mother when she was 3 years old.



27-Mar-11
March Meeting

A St. Patrick's themed meeting began with a nicely decorated hall and a lunch of sandwiches. A beautiful cake was present to Ethel for her 95th birthday and enjoyed by all.

The charter was draped for two members whom passed since our last meeting; Inga Johnson who was 102 and Wayne Peterson who was 63. John Nygard read both of their obituaries. A motion was made and seconded to make a donation to the Bishop Hill archives in Inga's name, and to Vasa Park in Wayne's name.

A motion was made and seconded for the lodge to take $50 in raffle tickets to support the upcoming VASA convention.

John concluded the meeting by reading a very entertaining email he received, '20 things that happened since the Cubs won the World Series.'

A reminder was made that due to Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday there will be no April Meeting. The next meeting will be held Sunday May 22, 2011.

The day ended with 3 fun rounds of Bunco. Many nice prizes were brought by all.

February Meeting

A Mardi Gras themed meeting began with everyone receiving beads to wear upon entering the hall (which was beautifully decorated to match the theme). Members were treated to a nice sandwich tray and dessert.

The charter was draped for Shirley Koch whom had passed away since our last meeting. John Nygard read her obituary. A motion was made and seconded to make a donation to Vasa Park in Shirley's name.

The sick report reported Secretary Dorothy Chapman in Resurrection for a bad nose bleed among other issues. Nils Hedeen is now in Bethany Home.

A new position was created and taken on by Judith Styvesant to send birthday and sympathy cards to members.

Louise Nygard brought a nicely done book of documents and pictures from our 100th anniversary celebration.

Louise and John Nygard visited Inga Johnson in Bethany Terrace to present her with her 50 yr membership pin. She showed it off to everyone on her floor!

Louise Nygard ended the meeting by reading '30 things I did not have a child.'

The day concluded with a fun game of Penny Anti.

January Meeting

The Valentine's Day themed meeting had a decent turnout considering the cold weather and icy streets. A lunch catered from Brown's Chicken was enjoyed by all. The hall was nicely decorated with Valentine's hearts all around.

A short meeting followed. Financial Secretary Louise Nygard reminded everyone the program book for 2001 was out. She also reminded all the annual dues were now due to her. The trustees reported that the books had been audited the week prior and everything was balanced.

One application for membership was received from Daniel Szymanski. A motion was made and he was accepted and initiated into the lodge.

Candidates for the 2011 VASA convention in Michigan City, IN were chosen. John and Louise Nygard will attend to represent Kronan.

The sick report reported Arnie Lindquist still laid up at home due to clogged arteries in his leg preventing a sore on his foot to heal.

The day concluded with a few fun rounds of Valentine's Bingo.

November Meeting

A Holiday themed meeting was had combining Thanksgiving and Christmas. One table was adorned with Thanksgiving colors, turkeys, and pumpkins, while the other contained two Swedish decorated Christmas trees and traditional candles.

A short meeting was had. Two membership transfers from Hagar Lodge were received for Joy Harmin and Marcella Carlson. A motion was made and seconded to accept them. Chairman John Nygard initiated them in.

The charter was draped for long-time member Vera Nelson. She passed away on October 12, 2010. Her obituary was read and a motion was made and seconded to donate $50 to the Swedish American Museum in Vera's name.

Marion Steneck was present at the meeting and Chairman John Nygard presented her with a 60 year membership pin. Her husband Charles Steneck was unable to attend and his 50 year membership pin was also awarded to Marion to take home to him.

The schedule for next year will be on it's way in the mail shortly. The next meeting will be January 23, 2011 as our regularly scheduled December meeting will conflict with the Christmas holiday.

Webmaster/Historian Kim Bojarski reminded everyone to visit Kronan's website to view the recently uploaded pictures from the 100th Anniversary Celebration.

The day concluded with a Christmas present grab bag. Santa John (Nygard) and Mrs. Clause Louise (Nygard) passed out a small ornament and candy to everyone in attendance. Arnie Lidquist brought lingonberry and pepparkakor for all as well.

October Meeting

The hall was nicely decorated for the days theme of Halloween.

Three guests joined us today from Austin Lodge, Mike and Diane Figueroa and June Thornblum.

John Nygard thanked everyone for coming out to support the lodge at it's 100th Anniversary Celebration. John and Louise Nygard took a trip up to Walwroth, WI to present a 50 year pin to Margit Erickson.

Election of officers for 2011 took place. All positions were kept except:

A Costume Contest concluded the day. Three members dressed up, Louise Nygard came as a witch, John Nygard came as an oil tycoon, and Audrey Fields came as Lady Capricorn. All that participated received a price.

100th Anniversary Celebration

Kronan's 100th Anniversary Celebration took place at the Holiday Inn Skokie. The hall was decorated nicely, and Kim and Linda Bojarski made beautiful name tags for each in attendance to wear. The Mike Alongi Trio provided entertainment before during and after dinner.

Shortly after 2pm chairman John Nygard gave a brief opening speech thanking everyone for coming out and introducing all current and past Kronan officers, grand lodge officers and special guests. Following the blessing a nice dinner of Beef, Salmon, or Chicken with potato and vegetables was enjoyed by all. Dessert was ice cream with toppings and celebration cake.

During dinner Sten Hult spoke on behalf of District 8 congratulating Kronan on it's celebration. Per-Hugo also spoke congratulating the lodge.

After dinner John Nygard gave a nice speech about life way back when and how the lodge was formed and how it compares to life today. Past Chairman Virginia Lindroos then recited a poem about how we all got to be here today, and how that impacted Kronan's formation.

Following, John Nygard was given the honor of presenting membership award pins to a few members in attendance. A 60 year award was presented to Herman Dahl and Esther Schag. A 40 year award was presented to Vera Nelson, and Joan Asplund. Louis and John Nygard will be traveling to Walworth, WI to present Margit Erickson with her 50 year award. June Meeting

A Midsummer celebration was had with the hall decorated accordingly complete with some great Swedish music. Lunch was a sandwich tray with all the fixings.

Sick report found the following members under the weather: Bernice Baake, Esther Schag, Al Meid, Arnie Lidquist, Christa H. Maryann Swanson is currently at the ST. Matthews Center for Health.

Plans to send out invitations to the Grand Lodge and District Lodge for our 100th Anniversary is underway.

A fun game concluded the day. Items were hidden in bags by Louise Nygard, and members were to feel out what that item was.

May Meeting

The hall was decorated nicely to reflect the days theme of Scandinavian Heritage. Lunch was catered by Brown's Chicken.

John Nygard reported on the Vasa convention he attended with Joan Asplund. Kronan had a table set up where Ross Anderson displayed his hand made furniture. New officers were elected, and we now have a new district master, Tom C, while Nancy Hult is the district secretary. The sick report reported John and Louise Nygard's son in New York was operated on for cancer. Louise has been out in New York since the begining of May to help care for her grandchildren. Arnie Lidquist had an angioplasty due to no circulation in his leg and an ulcer on his foot. Nels Hedeen fell out of his wheelchair and broke something in his neck. He is now at Bethany Home.

The day concluded with a show and tell of member's mementos from Scandinavia. John Nygard brought a knife from his grandfather and a brass container belonging to his father. Jay Anderson brought his hand made mini furniture. Ruth Helgeson brought her mother's confirmation Bible entirely in Swedish. Hertha brought a Santa vase/glogg glass.

April Meeting

Members started the afternoon with a nice sandwich tray from Dominick's with cupcakes for dessert.

The application for membership for Majorie Johnson was accepted and she was initiated into the lodge.

The sick report found Maryann Swanson in an Evanston nursing home, but doing better. Nels Hedeen is now in assisted living.

Arnie Lidquist was voted as John Nygard's alternate as our representative to Vasa Park.

A motion was made a seconded to take a membership with the Central Swedish Committee for this year.

The day concluded with the crazy hat day competition. Eight members came sporting a crazy hat. Bernice Baake (who came in a shower cap) and Joan Asplund (who came in an Easter Bonnet) tied as the winners of the day. Prizes were given to all that participated.

March Meeting

A nice roast beef sandwich lunch with all the trimmings was had by members.

A short meeting brought a new application for membership. John reminded members to remember Kronan's 100th Anniversary Celebration set for September.

The day concluded with a fun round of Bunco. Nice prizes for the winners were donated by members.

February Meeting

Members enjoyed a St. Patricks Day themed luncheon of corned beef.

A short meeting was held to ensure time to enjoy the planned activities.

A reminder was made that if anyone that wants to attend meetings but has trouble due to transportation issues they should contact John and Louise Nygard to help to arrange assistance in attending the meetings.

A reminder was made to make note of the March meeting being held one week earlier due to the regularly scheduled meeting falling on Palm Sunday.

Hank Sanderson spoke about the Friends of The Viking Ship. The Viking Ship was sailed in 1893 from Norway to Chicago for the Worlds Fair. The ship was left here and has since taken home in places such as Lincoln Park, the Science and Industry Museum, as well as it's current home in Good Templer Park. The Friends of The Viking Ship is a committee that has set out to restore the ship and preserve it buy putting it in a permanent home on display. A motion was made and seconded to send a donation to this group to help the restoration of the ship.

Nordic Folk Lodge No. 761, the 2010 host of the district convention sent out raffle books in support of the upcoming convention. A motion was made and seconded to purchase the tickets on behalf of Kronan.

The sick report reported that Nils Hedeen is currently at a nursing home, but enjoy himself there, and Florence Swanson was able to celebrate her 95th birthday with friends and family.

It was brought up to be more active in sending Birthday, condolences, as well as get well cards to members. Hank Sanderson will be picking up cards to have at meetings for all members present to sign and be sent out accordingly.

January Meeting

Our Valentine's Day themed meeting began with a catered lunch from Browns Chicken.

It was reported that the auditors met in January to audit the books, and everything balanced for the 2009 year.

A reminder was made of Kronan's 100th anniversary taking place on September 26, 2010 at the Holiday Inn in Skokie, IL. There will be entertainment, guest speakers, as well as an all around fun time reminiscing.

Another reminder was made of Kronan now having a webpage on the Vasa site. Webmaster/Historian Kim Bojarski asked members to please pass along any pictures from the last 100 years to be featured on the site.

The district convention this year will be May 14 - 16, 2010 in Michigan City, IN. John Nygard, Joan Asplund, Doris Sutor, and Judy Stuyvesant were elected as delegates to represent Kronan. Alternates will be Louise Nygard and Dorothy Chapman.

Two new officers were installed into office for the 2010 year. Linda Bojarski was installed as Treasurer and Kim Bojarski was installed as Master of Ceremonies and Historian. All other officers are carrying through from 2009.

A motion was carried to take out a full page ad for the Vasa convention in May. The main focus of the ad will be to advertise Kronan's 100th year anniversary celebration.

Dues are due to Louise Nygard for the 2010 year. However all but 3 members are already paid up.

Florence Swanson sent correspondence thanking the lodge for the old age benefit received. She is doing well and misses attending lodge meetings.

Louise Nygard reminded members of the Old Age Benefit that is available through the grand lodge. You can apply for up to a $2000 grant to assist with medical visits/supplies/medicine. Contact Louise if you'd like to apply.

November Meeting

Our Thanksgiving/Christmas themed meeting today was a big hit, serving a nice lunch of cold cut sandwiches.

The sick report showed Bob Anderson, who regularly attends meetings, not in attendance. He fell and spent some time in the hospital, but has since gone home. Chairman John Nygard will call and check up on him. Nils Hedeen was reported to have fallen and broke his arm. He spent some time in rehab but has since returned home. Millie Ring has been reported as doing fine.

Cultural Leader Doris Sutor brought in a way for members to keep up, brush up, or learn Swedish. She found a booklet and CD set on learning Swedish at her local Library and encouraged members to look into doing the same.

Assistant Secretary Kim Bojarski announced Kronan #179's website going live on the main Vasa Order site. She passed out hard copies of the site pages for members to see and requested members to participate by passing along pictures from any Kronan #179 activity from the last 100 years to be featured on the website.

Kronan's 100th anniversary was discussed and Judith Stuyvesant offered to find and cover expenses of the entertainment.

Doris Sutor suggested for the new year that members wear name tags to help new members meet everyone, and for aging members to help remember. Financial Secretary Louise Nygard will look into making some for the next meeting.

Assistant Secretary Kim Bojarski was also elected Historian for the 2010 year.

Arnie Lindquist brought members gifts 'from Santa.' Every member received a reusable shopping bag from the Swedish Bakery and a package of Anna's ginger thins.

Due to the proximity of Christmas this year and trend of the weather the December 2009 meeting was motioned and seconded to be canceled. The next scheduled meeting is January 24, 2010 where we will be celebrating Valentine's Day. Also due to the March 2010 meeting landing on Palm Sunday it was motioned and seconded to move the March 28, 2010 meeting one week earlier to March 21, 2010.

The day was concluded by a classic Christmas Carol sing-a-long.

October Meeting


Officers for the 2010 year were elected today. The updated officer list may be found to the left under Officers. The 2010 program was planned and approved. All meeting dates and activities for 2010 can be found to the left under Calendar.
