Interested to know more about your Swedish roots?

Need encouragement to get started? Our program will include member presentations on discovering your family history and ways of sharing that story. We'll see an example of finding the Swedish home and farm an ancestor left, and who more ancestors were, starting with a few clues from pictures and papers. All of this is possible because the Swedes have the earliest census records of any country, and theyre online. If you are simply interested in making your collection of family papers, photos and relics better organized and accessible, we'll look at that, too. We'll show creative ways of sharing our family history with others and getting the younger people involved.

10-Feb-19
Swedish Classical Singers

Sandra Stark, the new chair of Jubileum, will lead a program on Swedish Classical Singers, talking about a number of classical singers that you may or may not have heard about. You will hear sample music of each one. At the end, if anyone else would like to tell about a singer you like that wasn't mentioned, please feel free to do so, or even bring a CD sample. Contact Robert Merrill phone (608) 238-4981 email: [email protected]

13-Jan-19
The Almost Nearly Perfect People: Behind the Myth

Our program is an open discussion of Michael Booth's book, "The Almost Nearly Perfect People: Behind the Myth of the Scandinavian Utopia." Bring your favorite quotes, explanations of how the author gets it totally wrong, and stories -- yours and Booth's -- that made you wince, laugh, or both. It promises to be a good time. There will also be selection and installation of officers for the upcoming year.

14-Jan-18
Famous Swedes

Members of Jubileum were requested to researched a famous Swede. Presenters brought a number of facts about the Swede. Some members dressed up like his or her famous individual or brought items that helped identify the person. Fun was had by all. Liza Ekstrand, the district deputy, installed the members of the executive board during the business section of the meeting.

10-Dec-17
Lucia Julbord

Jubileum 755 celebrated the winter solstice and the Christmas season with a smörgåsbord to celebrate Saint Lucia. Members enjoyed a wonderful Swedish julbord (Christmas buffet) followed by a Luciatåg (Lucia court) and carol singing in both English and Swedish.

12-Nov-17
Scandinavian Crafts

Joan Braun, member of Vasa Jubileum #755, presented a program on Scandinavian Crafts. The business meeting elected new members to the executive board.

08-Oct-17
Scandinavian Accordion Music

Joyce Carey and her daughter Jenny presented a program on "Nordic Songs." They featured accordion music from Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Germany. They answered questions at the end of her presentation. Some members of Vasa even had the opportunity to play an accordian.

24-Jun-17
Midsommar Celebration

We gathered at Arbor Covenant Church at 2:00 to dress the pole. Each participant brought fresh flowers (from their gardens or florist). General greens were gathered from the church property. Once the pole was decorated we gathered to sing and dance. After a brief time around the pole we gathered in the fellowship room of the church for a summer potluck. During the potluck dinner three musicians who played the hardanger fiddles entertained the group.

10-May-17
Pea Soup and Pancakes

We met on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, for Jubileum's annual pea soup and pancake dinner. We gathered at 5:00 to decorate the church. Hot foods arrived at 5:30. We enjoyed an evening meal at 6:00, followed by a brief program of Swedish proverbs. The internet is replete with such proverbs. We welcomed proverbs in Swedish but we honored proverbs in English as well.

09-Apr-17
Rosmåling

Becky Cleghorn and Catherine Coy from Søstre Design discussed rosemaling and the special kind of painting made popular from the province of Dalarna.

12-Mar-17
Show and Tell

Members of Jubileum 755 brought items of interest from Sweden. These items were used to share stories of their heritage. One member wore a pendant made from a stone taken from her family home in Sweden. Another member showed the family Bible in which were pressed flowers and other items from the family's history. This program is always a favorite! The stories are poignant and personal.

12-Feb-17
Hymns of the Pietistic Movement

Jubileum member Gunnard Swanson discussed hymns and church music written by Swedish authors and composers. The selected composers were a part of the Pietistic movement of the 18th century. The group heard interesting stories behind some of the hymns or about the composers. The group sang some of these songs in both English and Swedish.
