Guest Speaker on Belle Gunness

Bruce Johnson is a native of La Porte, Indiana with degrees in education from Ball State University and Valparaiso University. He has completed post-graduate work in international studies in England, France, Russia, Australia, Japan, and China. He currently teaches at South Central School in La Porte County, but has taught previously with the Peace Corps on the island of St. Vincent in the Eastern Caribbean and as a missionary teacher in the Liberian bush of western Africa. In 2007, he volunteered to create a historic presentation to observe the 100th anniversary of the Gunness discoveries and raise funds to purchase gravestones for the victims buried in La Porte. It was his goal to research and write a factual script for The Gunness Mystery and use archival photos to create an accurate account that could be presented to local organizations in exchange for donations to the memorial fund. He also was determined to locate as many living relatives of victims as possible who would be able to take part in the dedication of the gravestones the following spring. More than forty relatives of victims were in attendance from throughout the country for the memorial dedication services on April 26, 2008.

Estonian Swedes and their Music a Great Success

The visit of Dr. Ain Haas (Sociology, IUPUI) on April 17, 2011 was a great success. After a marvelous pot-luck dinner to start off the afternoon, a total of 23 Linne Lodge members and guests enjoyed a talk and musical presentation by Ain Haas, whose talents were shown as he played numerous bowed lyres, Estonian kannels, as well as a bagpipe - all which are well known among Swedish Estonians. The audience was enthralled by the music. Check out the many photos from this event in the photo gallery.

Learning About Genealogy

Our regular meeting on Sunday, Nov.7 was a great success. Over 25 members and visitors attended to listen to a great presentation about genealogical research and the resources available at the South Bend LDS Church. Our guest speaker Dave Espich provided much valuable insight into how we can search for our family histories, including Swedish genealogy websites that will enable members to search for family histories. The meeting lasted beyond 4 pm as we all enjoyed our time with Mr. Espich. Due to the great interest among members, he will return for another presentation in 2011.

Annual Picnic a Success

On Sunday, July 11, a group of 18 Linné Lodge members enjoyed a picnic at the home of Mika & Grace Roinila. We had plenty of food thanks to all the dishes brought by members. We heard Finnish folk music, spent time visiting and talking with friends, and even had a chance to try a Finnish sauna and cool down by jumping into a pool. The installation of a new 16-year old member, more fellowship with coffee, cake, and bingo game highlighted the day. Thanks to everyone for spending such a wonderful afternoon together. See photos of the event in the gallery.
